Mr. Dernick,
I was asked the question of why the Lee county school district would want to lay me off instead of someone else.
I happen to have a disability called Idiopathic Hypersomnia. The medication I was taking while I worked at the school district was called Provigil.
The cost for a one month supply of Provigil was 1689.26, of which I had to pay a $40.00 copayment.
The yearly cost to the school district (they are self-insured) for Provigil alone was $20,271.12
In addition, my salary was $62,500. Per year approximately.
Also, I had just had hand surgery to replace my thumb joint in the right hand and was in the process of going to physical therapy and was about to have the left hand operation. In addition, I have a hernia and need to get that fixed as well. I also have and take medication for hypertension, Social Anxiety disorder and Agoraphobia and depression and obstructive sleep apnea. The woman I lived with (partner) for 7 years and I split up at the same time I was laid off. I am not sure if the school district knew about my break-up for certain.
My Mortgage payments are $1000.00 per month, not including utilities and taxes ($1600.00/yr. approximately) and insurance ($1700.00/yr. approximately) I had to stop taking the medication for my Idiopathic hypersomnia because I could no longer afford it and begin taking a cheaper, more dangerous substitute. I had cobra costing $540 per month, but I was having trouble making the payments and was 2 days late and the school district cut off my health insurance. I was paying my ex-wife $850.00 child support payments which was deducted from my salary each month.
I would say I am somewhat more costly than the younger guys that replaced me.
Sincerely,
James F. Lico
